48. storage gone wrong

What a wonderful sight:
All empty. =) The boxes got flattened and slipped behind the drawer unit in the craft room and the three plastic bins will go into the shed for now. Since I'm planning another move, I'll keep these as supplies, otherwise they'd be out too.

Did a little organizing in my craft room this morning, getting my sewing cabinet set up so I can actually use it now that there's ample space in there. Today's item:
A craft organizer. It seemed like a good idea, but never really lived up to its own hype - a pain to use and took up way too much space. The contents moved to the drawers in my sewing cabinet and this can go take up space in someone else's home. =)

  1. Oh, I bet it feels good to have freed up all that space (as well as getting rid of a bunch of stuff in the meantime). I've been slooooowly going through my house and decluttering. I love dropping off each load at the thrift store, and being able to get rid of a storage container at the same time is like the cherry on top.

    1. The ridiculous thing was, I had only ever used about 1/3 of the containers in this thing... and never liked it! My sewing cabinet has small drawers down both sides so plenty of space for needles/thread/buttons/etc. Everything I've come across so far has been transferred to the drawers... and I still have at least half the drawers with nothing in them at all. Other craft supplies will soon be moved over and I'm hoping to soon be able to ditch the large plastic drawer unit in there too!

  2. I'm starting to realize what a scam all of these "organizer" products are. If we just own enough to fit in the drawers we have, we don't have to waste huge amounts of money on these organizing products (that just take up space and make us more DISorganized!) Awesome that you've pared down your supplies so that you don't need anything beyond the drawers you already have!

    1. Agreed! This is my goal... to have only what fits in the drawers in my sewing cabinet. I'm planning to use up most/all of of my fabric stash in the next few months, leaving just the yarn stash that's bulky and in plastic bins. The storage industry is BIG business these days between all the organizers and bins and even the self-storage units for rent. Just think how crazy it is, we have stores JUST for storage containers/organizing stuff. Americans in general have so much crap we never touch and want it out of our way. I'm good at packing it away but I don't want to need that skill anymore...

  3. I have a pretty compact stash of sewing supplies. Maybe 5 or 6 fabrics in waiting to do something with one day. This is down from about 50 different fabrics (each about 1.5 yards each) that I listed on eBay in little groups.
Anyways, when I first got heavy into sewing - I went out & bought a ton of sewing organizers & little bins & boxes. None of them worked worth a darn. Empty clear plastic spice jars or little glass baby food jars work so much better to corral miscellaneous buttons, hook & eyes, etc. But having said that..after I put all the little buttons & misc. notions in separate spice containers ....did I realize I had like 15 different containers that were mostly empty.
So I dumped al the notions (like buttons, hook & eyes, thimble, etc in 1 of the larger spice containers & went from 15 containers down to 2. The 2nd container holds needles.

On a side note, just to keep from confusing ya - I'm the same Jane that was subscribed to your blog up until a day or so ago. Yesterday, I finally got around to combining all my random Google accounts into 1. Kinda like sewing containers - down from 15 to 2! LOL

    1. Ah, digital clutter is clutter too. =) Good job on paring all the sewing supplies down. Being overly organized can be detrimental. I have a few dividers in the drawers, mainly to wrangle things like pins that I don't want sticking me. lol Thanks for the reminder on the spice tins. I have three that came free with something else that I don't use for my spices... would be perfect to replace the plastic containers my pins and needles are in!
