139. drip dry

With a pending move in the next few months, it might be time to step it up again with the decluttering. I plan to end today with a stack of cookbooks ready to head out the door. Since I moved my remaining cookbooks onto the shelf in my craft/storage room, I'm realizing how little I actually use them. Having to go into a different room to get the book makes it much more clear how often (or rarely) I'm pulling one out to use. The ones I have on my iPad get used much more often. It's definitely time to thin the physical ones out a lot more. Getting down to just the one bookshelf seems like a real possibility soon! I'm amazed that I started out with an overflowing 6' bookshelf of cookbooks and am down to just 2 of those 5 shelves left and soon will be down to 1.

Today's items:

The bamboo dish drainer that is not the most stable thing to use and holds much less than you'd think... and the plastic tray that goes under it. I like the idea of the bamboo, but hate using it. I've been using the broken dishwasher to drain dishes and it's nice having the extra space for larger items without a need for creative stacking. lol If my next place doesn't have a dishwasher, I'll get a metal rack that will be easier to clean than this.

  1. I had one of those a few years ago! It wasn't the worst drainer I've ever owned, but was awkward. I don't even have one anymore - I just let the dishes dry on a tea towel on the counter these days. I simply don't have the space for a drainer. I have a friend coming for a visit next week and I asked her if she'd be willing to be a 'declutter buddy' for me, you know, ask those difficult questions and help with decisions. Fortunately she's quite agreeable to it! :)

    1. I did the tea towel for awhile, but it doesn't work out so well with kitties... esp this time of year when they're basically shedding their entire coat each day (it seems like it anyway). When I build, I plan to build in a dish rack into the cabinet.

Awesome on the declutter buddy! I hope you work well together and can get a lot done in the time she's there. Don't forget to have fun too! =)

    2. You've got me really interested in the tiny houses now! I was looking at the other designs from the Whitehorse builder, but I think I'd want something slightly larger. I saw a lovely one in a magazine I was looking at yesterday. I'll see if I can find the link to it - it was a beach house in the UK. Very sleek.

My friend and I get along very well, so I think she will be VERY good for me and I'll be amazed at how much I actually accomplish. But yes, fun is definitely the priority! :)

    4. Yeah, a bit more space might be nice, but I love the portability of the tiny homes. That beach house is cute, love the huge window! The designs are getting better and better.

  2. I thought I started out with a lot of cookbooks, but it sounds like you had me beat. If you're like me, you won't miss most of those once they're gone.

If you have a double-sided sink, the metal ones that fit in one side of the sink keep your counter clear. I thought I was being smart by getting a dish-drying mat. Then I found the kitty sleeping on it. Now, I have to hang it up when it isn't being used.

    1. Ugh, yeah, I had a lot. The bookcase was 6' tall and a couple feet wide and full... plus some that wouldn't fit. Not sure of the number, but I'm now down to one shelf in that case plus maybe 3-4 that didn't fit on the one shelf. You'll see quite a few on the blog this week. :-) And yeah, I doubt I'll miss any of those once I haul them out of here.

I'd like to build in a dish drying cabinet when I build. I do have a double sink here, but the 2nd side is tiny and the larger side far too big. Bad design. There's definitely an advantage to building and being able to choose for yourself.

  3. I finally got rid of all my cookbooks not because I don't cook but because I rarely used the cookbooks save for a handful of recipes. I just doesn't occur to me to go look in a cookbook for a recipe anymore...I head straight for the internet these days. So for those few recipes I did want to keep from the old school cookbooks..I simply took a digital photo of the recipe & saved it to my iPad - which has become my new recipe cookbook binder if you will.

I use the Paprika recipe manager app nowadays to organize my recipes on my iPad. Also, all those old 3x5 card recipes I had for years - I've slowly converted them to digital by photographing them as well &/or just added them to my Paprika app. Yeah, there was a little pang of sentimentality in getting rid of old handwritten recipes...but then again, not really. I do have the digital photo of them should I feel the need to sit around & stare at handwritten recipes (um, yeah, probably no).

As far as dish racks are concerned. I long ago decided to not devote permanent real estate on my countertops for a dish rack. If I hand wash something - I temporarily lay out a dish towel & let the dishes dry but even then I usually go ahead & dry off the dishes right then & there as I've become so obsessed at keeping any clutter off my countertops since there is so very little space to begin with.

    1. I do prefer the digital cookbooks, but have a few that aren't available as ebooks. I've been keeping scanned and typed up recipes in GoodReader divided into folders for various types of food. I use more digital cookbooks and online recipes so not sure $5 for that app would be worth it. I don't have a lot of old recipes since most I did have weren't vegan. It amazes me that publishers are still putting out books and not offering them in ebook format at this point.

I do love having that drainer off the counter! I love the built in drained cabinets - nothing on the counter ad the dishes are put away immediately.
